Ship pine in Kyoto

Rikushu-no-matsu is one of three famous pines in Kyoto. Originally a bonsai and shaped as a boat (which my poor photography skills failed to capture), it belonged to Shogun Ashikaga. Shortly after his death, it was planted here in the garden of Kinkakuji Temple (Golden Pavilion) as he was a great patron of this temple. Now that was approximately 650 years ago!! So, endurance here belongs to both the tree and also its caretaker(s) – in looking after this ancient and significant treasure.
